Hey friends, it’s Quick Tip Tuesday where I answer a quick question submitted by you one of my podcast listeners. Today’s question is, When can I start putting cereal in my baby’s bottle? The short answer is you don’t. I know that your mom or your grandma may swear by the old cereal in the bottle trick, you know, they’ll say it kept you fuller longer, it helps you sleep better, you know all those things. But the reality is that you really should not be adding cereal to your baby’s bottle at all. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and to CDC, they both agree that adding cereal to a baby’s bottle is risky, and it really offers no nutritional benefit whatsoever. For the first year of your baby’s life, their main source of nutrition should come from the breast or bottle. And then when they’re four to six months old, showing signs of readiness to start solids, like sitting up on their own. You can supplement their diet with cereal. And then if you do give cereal, opt for oat cereal instead of rice. And this is just because rice really the rice cereal has no nutritional value whatsoever. Rice is also high in arsenic and you don’t want to be giving it to your baby all the time. So if you do give your baby cereal as you’re starting solids just offer the cereal separately after they’ve had the breast or bottle. So you give them their main meal first and then you offer some cereal or whatever other solid you want to try. Alright ladies, that’s it.
